Marc Stein, a well-known insider, says that Anthony Davis wants someone else to be the coach. Davis prefers James Borrego over JJ Redick. Stein wrote on June 5 that people in the league believe Anthony Davis wants Borrego as the new coach.

This news came after Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that JJ Redick is the top choice for the job. Charania wrote on June 4 that no final decision has been made yet. The Lakers still need to go through more steps in their search for a head coach. But it seems Redick is their leading choice right now.

Stein explained why Anthony Davis might prefer Borrego. Borrego has been a head coach twice before. He coached in Orlando and Charlotte. Redick has never been a head coach. Also, Borrego and Davis worked together briefly when Borrego was with the Pelicans. Davis was drafted by the Pelicans in June 2012, and Borrego was an assistant coach there at that time.

Borrego has more experience as a head coach than Redick. But Borrego’s teams did not win a lot. His record as a head coach is 148-183. This is a .447 winning percentage.

The Lakers, with stars like Davis and LeBron James, want to win a championship. Does Borrego have what it takes to lead them to a title? Davis seems to think so.

Lakers Could Still Hire Borrego

Even if the Lakers choose Redick, they might still bring Borrego on as an assistant coach. But this could be complicated because Borrego is still under contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Stein reported on May 27 that the Lakers want Borrego on their coaching staff if Redick becomes the head coach. But the Pelicans might not let Borrego leave. He is currently the associate head coach in New Orleans under Willie Green.

This situation is similar to past Lakers coaching hires. Jason Kidd and Terry Stotts were both asked to be assistants after not getting the head coach job. Kidd accepted, but Stotts did not. It is not yet known what Borrego would do if offered the assistant job.

Why Does Anthony Davis Not Want Redick?

Stein has a theory about why Anthony Davis might prefer Borrego over Redick. It might have to do with votes for the All-Defensive Team. Redick, as a broadcaster, votes for these awards. He did not vote for Davis for the All-Defensive Team this season.

Davis talked about this in an interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. Davis said he is no longer trying to win individual awards. He feels the league does not give him the recognition he deserves.

“They’re not giving it to me,” Anthony Davis said on April 22. “The league doesn’t like me. I don’t know what else to do. I’m over it. I’m just going to help the team win and try to play for a championship. Accolades and individual awards, I’m done with those.”

Davis is known as one of the best defenders in NBA history. He has never won the Defensive Player of the Year award. Redick’s vote might be part of why Davis has not won this award. It seems Davis has not forgotten this.

In summary, Anthony Davis prefers James Borrego as the Lakers’ new head coach over JJ Redick. Davis values Borrego’s experience and their past connection. Despite Redick being the favorite choice, the decision is not final yet. The Lakers may consider bringing Borrego on as an assistant if Redick is chosen. Davis’s preference could be influenced by past voting decisions where Redick did not support him for defensive awards.
